Networking is the key to business success. It helps you find a job, recruit talent, and find customers and investors. Moreover, networking comes in multiple forms: meeting people one-on-one, having a regular conference call with a mentor or peer, attending industry events or connecting via social media. So, to do it, we give you five tips to network like a pro:
1. Build Genuine Relationships
One quality connection or conversation is better than 20 superficial ones. Whether you’re at a conference or social outing, focus on creating genuine relationships based on listening, reciprocity and shared interests and goals.
2. If you want to connect with someone, find a way to help that person
It’s easy to assume that a wealthy and successful contact already has everything he or she desires and wants nothing from the likes of you. If you’re thinking that way, get over it. It’s always worth the trouble to find out a contact’s desires and concerns. The chances are high that you’ll be able to find something worthwhile you can offer.
3. Think people, not positions
It’s not that easy to break into the inner circle of 50- or 60-year-old executives. It’s a lot easier to build up that equity early. So, think about who in your network seems to be going places and is really interesting and make a strong connection. Even if they don’t become an influencer, it’ll be an interesting relationship.
4. Stay In Touch
One of the easiest ways to expand and strengthen your network is to build on relationships you already have. This can translate to staying in touch with your connections or strengthening your least obvious ones like an old colleague or neighbor. Reach out periodically, every five months or so, just to say hello. Another way to stay in touch is through social media (such as Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter) It’s one of the best ways to stay updated and in touch.
5. Diversify Your Events
Attending industry-relevant conferences or summits allows you to meet people with similar interests and provides opportunities to brainstorm and connect with them on a personal level. Another way to take your event networking to the next level is through showcasing your expertise as a speaker instead of an attendee. It can boosts your credibility as a thought leader in the space and gives a platform to offer your insights to others.
